The monastery is on the banks of river Deza, in the parish of Santa María de Carboeiro, and it belongs to the council of Silleda, in the shire of Deza, Pontevedra, Galicia.
Its origins go back to the X century. It is located along the river Deza nearby its mouth into river Ulla, in a territory called “Trasdeza”, as it was seen by cartographs from Lugo “on the other side of Deza”.
The church has been constructed in the roman style and it represents one of the monuments more characteristic of the galician middle ages art. It dates from the XII century, the floor is a latin cross with three naves and transept. It can be assured that the author of Portico de la Gloria, Master Mateo, was the designer of the plans of this basilical church, inspired in the roman style of Santiago de Compostela.
In year 1965 it was filmed the film Cotolay, the 'carboeiro compostelano' who, at the begining of the XII century, helped San Francisco of Asís to found in Santiago de Compostela his first convent in Galicia. Some years later it has been a film studio for actors as Aitana Sánchez Gijón or even Charlton Heston.
