- The Portuguese Way
The Portuguese Way becomes important after the XII century and it made possible to consolidate routes and to foster cultural and economic exchanges between both regions.
The Portuguese Way is one route that travels across almost all along Portugal, from south to north. It became really well known after the independence of Portugal in the XII century. Since then, and up to our days, the ways of pilgrimage to worship Santiago de Compostela became more and more repercussion in the neighbour land of Lusitania. In fact, our neighbours have taken part with enthusiasm in this experience and they were lucky thus they have been constantly supported by members of the monarchy, nobility and the clergy. The reasons were strictly religous and thanks to this continuous flow of people between Portugal and Galicia the cultural, intellectual and economic exchanges flourished.
The routes of pilgrimage start in the neighbour country from city centres as: Lisboa, Santarem, Coimbra, Porto, Braga... and the main entrance to Galicia was, and it is still, the ancient village of Tui.
