Vigo - An area of natural beauty Vigo is placed in an area of natural beauty. At the entrance of "Ría de Vigo", a seaside valley flooded by sea, the town is surrounded by amazing beaches. It is the biggest city in Galicia with a population of, roughly, 300.000 inhabitants. The cultural offer in the city is large: nautical sports, rock concerts, A Pedra market, the "Cies Islands"...Generally speaking, due to its situation and its size, Vigo is a very appealing town as tourist destination.
It has a long history. From its celtic origins and roman settlement the city has survived through the years to several militar attacks, like the ones from the turkish empire, Francis Drake or even Napoleon.
Nowadays it is a thriving city, with a strong economy, presenting different sectors and activities like the fishing industry, the free port area, the car industry, the decorative stone and the shipyard industry.
As area of natural beauty it is almost a must to visit the Cíes Islands, which belong to the National Park of the Atlantic Islands, the beach of Samil or the bay of San Simón. In the city centre it is possible to stroll trough the old town and to visit the A Pedra market and the Cathedral of Santa Maria. The Museum of Contemporary Art, MARCO, and the Museum of the Sea are as well really interesting. The Mount of O Castro is in the middle of the town, like the Puerta del Sol. The bridge of Rande, which crosses the "ría" from one side to the other, is the emblem of the city and it offers a wonderful sight. |
