Santiago de Compostela is the capital of Galicia

The meaning of Santiago de Compostela is stressed by its history as pilgrim's destination. In year 813 the grave of the apostle Santiago was discovered and the christians started the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela looking for the help of the apostle and to get rid of their sins.

The cathedral was built in 1075 in roman style and, later on, baroque. At the main west entrance of the building is placed the famous masterpiece of maestro Mateo, the "Pórtico de la Gloria".

Besides the meaning as pilgrim's destination, Santiago de Compostela is a city of students with one of the oldest universties in Spain. At the same time, the regional government of Galicia, the "Xunta de Galicia", seats as well here.

Santiago offers as well a wide range of cultural events, both in summer and winter, and an interesting architecture. In the wholesale food market is possible to buy everyday, except on sunday, products like fish, meat, vegetables, seafood, etc.
Due to the number of parks in town, Santiago is quite "green". It is a must to stroll through the beautiful streets of Santiago!
