Ourense - The golden city Ourense was named "The golden city" by the romans. Even if the river Miño stopped centuries ago to bring the metal to its inhabitants, the city honours such honourable nickname.
It shares with other galician cities the beautiful old city centre, and its a must to go for a walk through its streets, parks and quite back alleys. Ourense presents a modernist district with peculiar buildings. The gothic church and cloister of San Francisco, The Trinity, Santa Eufemia, Santa María la Madre are specially interesting. The ancient Palacio Episcopal, which presents middle ages rests, has inside a museum with special archaeological collections.
In the outskirts it is placed the roman bridge, which was built under Trajano's government, and the new Millenium Bridge, where it is possible to enjoy an amazing view of the river Miño.
The Burgas are a thermal spring, or hot baths, where the water temperature can reach aroung 70 ºC. They are really well fitted-out and allow the traveller to get back his strength.
Ourense is a city with a promising future, placed in a strategic point and with a strong economy, represented by its technological industrial area. |
