The galician people do not match the famous stereotype that describes how the galician are. The north of Spain is not only regarding geography a different part of the rest of the country. The galician people are not the passionate andalusians and flamencos, as the spanish stereotype wants to transmit. The galicians are more reserved, even distrustful, polity and hospitable.
Flamenco and bullfighting are not easy to find here. The tradition of dance and music has celtic origins and, in this way, the galician pipe is one of the best known instruments. The galician dance is made up of couples dancing in circles. One of them presents the steps to follow and the others dance together.
In Galicia traditions and modern life, everywhere present, are really mixed up. There are men whose families were generation after generation fishermen, as they still are, and whose sons and daughters earn the double than them working in hairdresser's or as TV entertainers. It is as well possible to enjoy a hip hop live concert in Santiago de Compostela between a convent and the cathedral, in Quintana Square. The nuns represent the rich history, and the music, the young people.
As in the rest of Spain, the family is still very important in Galicia. It is normal to find young and old people all together going out to have a couple of wines or tapas. The young women do not get married so early as they used to do. They want a good job and no more than one children. Weddings are celebrated with all the family.
In Galicia there are two languages: spanish and galician. This last one is close to portuguese and it is, after Franco's death in 1975, as well the official language. |
