The history of Galicia is marked by the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela

600 years before Christ the celtic folk arrived to Galicia and they mixed with the natives. A lot of Castros were built, more than 3000 round houses, and it is still possible to found rests. The name of Galicia was as well given by the celtic nation, from "Galaicos" came "Galicia".
25 years before Christ, the wall in Lugo and the lighthouse in A Coruña were built by the roman empire.
The hermit Pelayo, in 813 after Christ, discovered, throught the light of the stars, the apostle's grave. From that very moment, the history of Compostela took off as pilgrimage destination. The men started to walk to Santiago to get rid of their sins. From 1181/82 onwards, it was officially possible to receive in Santiago de Compostela the absolution with the permission of Rome.
Roughly, in 990, the muslims destroyed several cities in north Spain, among them, Santiago de Compostela.
After this events, the romanesque contruction of Compostela's cathedral took place in 1075. In 1188 Master Mateo finished the well known "Portico de la Gloria".
After discovering America in 1492, the first ship with the brand good new arrived in Galicia, exactly in Baiona. And the latest spanish city, Granada, was liberated from the muslims.
The university of Santiago de Compostela was founded in 1495 and it is one of the oldest is Spain.
In 1982 Galicia achieved the statute of autonomy, and Santiago de Compostela as its capital, which was for a short period of time A Coruña.
In 1985, the UNESCO proclaimed Santiago de Compostela as world cultural heritage of the mankind, just before it was as well appointed as european culture city in 2000. The wall in Lugo was as well added to this list.

In 2001 Manuel Fraga, from people's party, won again the autonomic elections one more time with absolute majority. 2004 was the latest Holy Year because the 25 of July, the apostle's day, was on Sunday. The next Holy Years are 2010 and 2021. In 2005, and after 16 years with a right win government, the socialist party won and Galicia is governed right now by this left-centre party and the nationalist party BNG.
