Ferrol - A city with historic prominence. Ferrol or "El Ferrol" is in the northwest of Spain. It is a city open, both cultural and economically, to the sea. Its fishing, commercial and naval industry is a good proof of that. The city is the centre of a wider area, the metropolitan area of Ferrol, called Ferrolterra, and it covers the neighbouring municipalities.
The main four districts of the city are: the Magdalena, the "Old Ferrol", "Esteiro" and the "Arsenal", living proof of the importance that military architecture has still in this city.
The Plaza Vella, placed in the medieval part of the city, it is a good example of the sailor popular architecture. Casa do Patín is a must, built in 1975, and it was lately recovered as the university's library.
The city is especially appealing in Eastern, with deserved fame, holding spectacular processions and ceremonies. It is especially worth the "Santo Encuentro".
It is worth pointing out "La Cortina", a 500 metres long wall with a powerful cannon zone, the Dique de Sino, opened in 1879, which resulted one of the biggest docks in the world, and the "Plaza y Sala de Armas".
We recommend the visit to the sanctuary of San Andrés de Teixido, where you will find the highest cliffs in Europe. The village of Pontedeume, Cedeira, Mugardos, Ares, Redes, ete, each of them with its own cooking ans its own cultural heritage are not far away from Ferrol.
We must not forget the peculiar "ría", a valley flooded by the sea, where Ferrol is placed. It is possible to go for a journey by boat in order to visit the different places along the "ría": San Felipe's castle, built at the end of the 16th century, it is worth the visit.
At the same time, the surrounding area is a natural paradise where the watersports lovers can enjoy almost everything: sailing, windsurfing, fishing, diving, etc. Ferrol is surrounded by beautiful beaches, all of them perfect to practise these activities. The seaside lake of Doniños beach is especially nice. |
