In 1970 the old town of Betanzos was recognized as an historic and artistic heritage. Ptolomeo, in his work Geographie, mentioned already signs of primitive settlement in Betanzos,
with the name of Flavium Brigantium, although nowadays some historians place that city in A Coruña.
The city is located since 1219 on top of the old castro of Untia, being placed earlier in San Martiño de Tiobre, known as Betanzos o Vello.
In year 1465 Henry the IV granted the population the title of city, and in 1467 allowed the celebration of a yearly tax-free fair trade. But were the Catholic Kings who designated Betanzos as capital of the province, living since then an splendid period until the middle of the XIX century. A several number of fires, bad harvests and a new administrative division, which integrated the province of Betanzos in A Coruña, ended that great epoch. |
