A Coruña - A city surrounded by sea

The old part of the city is beautifully placed along a small peninsula, which is located at the same time between the harbour and the beach. The monument par excellence is the Torre de Hércules, more than 2000 years old.
Noteworthy are as well the "galerías", small porchs originally built to dry the laundry.
In 1588 A Coruña became really well known when a british fleet steered by Sir Francis Drake attacked the city. A big part of the city was destroyed but the people of A Coruña put up successfully resistance.
A butcher's woman, Maria Pita, put up resistance with outstanding courage. So, she became well known in A Coruña and the main square of the city was named after her name. Even today, there is a party in august to remember her.
